Why Independence and Republic day?

Why Independence and Republic day?

India i.e Bharat got independence on 15th August 1947, and it became a republic on 26th January 1950. Similarly there are other countries as well where we can see similar observations say Italy, Phillipines..

Ever thought why there are two days separate or what is the difference between being independent and being republic? Well, we are here because of the curiousity bug that we have so let's find out why this is the case.

Countries can become independent and republic at the same day given if things are set in such order. Some countries where maybe due being under colonial rule for long time or monarchial disputes may have two different days for the same. Post World War II, many countries got their independence, but were all Republic? So what exactly is the difference between being independent and being republic?

Being independent kind of means the functioning of the marked independent territory will be done from within. There would be no interference from outside. Those appointed as the head of the state will be responsible for the same.

Being republic comes a step after being independent where say a nation works based on the understanding between the citizens. Laws are laid in accordance with citizens, governments are set accordingly. Citizens have the power to decide. The constitution put in place decides the powers, responsibilities, rights of government and citizens accordingly.

We have to understand that even after being independent a country can continue to be in monarchial rule within, as mentioned above being independent means there functioning of the country would be decided by the head of the state and no interference from outside entities are expected.

A small example would be of Barbados who were independent by year 1966 however moved towards beinf a republic post 2020.

When it comes to being independent republic, there is a presence of president and a large legislative body where elections are held and every citizen hold equal rights for their status under the eyes of the law.

Also there is difference in how the customs and traditions are followed on each of these days when these two events are celebrated on different days. One such example can be say for India i.e. Bharat, on Independence day, hoisting of flag happens while for Republic day its the unfurling of flag which takes place.

As we know what being independent means, here is few ways on how different government systems can be,

  • Monarchial - under rule of one, typical heriditary or generational
  • Oligarch - under rule of few powerful people
  • Democracy - under citizens rule, majority works
  • Republic - here, power to citizens who elect representatives for running the country.
  • Theocracy - where the government kind of is ruled/influenced by religious leaders or law
  • Anarchy - no rule, everyone for themselves. This happens and there is total chaos in the whole country.

There can also be a combination of two here. For example India i.e Bharat is a democratic republic country. Another example could be of United Kingdom which is one of the largest democracies we have however it is a constitutional monarchy where the king or queen works with the elected parliament, same can be said for Netherlands, Spain, Denmark as well.

A nation goes through a lot of sacrifices of its people for getting independence and to have a system setup for its proper functioning and bringing order to a country. Its a duty being a citizen to ensure that as we grow as an individual , we contribute towards the growth of our society, country and the whole.world!

That's about it for the curiousity bug for now. Until next time remember to feed the curious mind with more questions!
